Own Your RTK Network: Cloudbase Cellular RTK vs Radio vs SF-RTK Comparision

If you're running RTK on your farm today, odds are you're paying for it one of two ways: a radio network through your local dealer, or John Deere's SF-RTK satellite subscription at $1,500 per receiver, per year. First, a 60-second refresher: what RTK actually does

Every GPS receiver has a little bit of drift. Satellites are 12,000+ miles up, and the atmosphere bends their signals just enough that your position wanders a few inches through the day. For tillage, that's fine. For planting into strip-till berms, running the same traffic lanes, or coming back to the same rows for side-dress — it's not.

RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) fixes this with a simple trick: a base station sitting at a known, fixed point measures the GPS error in real time and broadcasts a correction to your tractor. Your receiver applies the correction and lands on repeatable, sub-inch accuracy — the same line this year, next year, and five years from now.

The only real question is how the correction gets from the base to your cab. That's where the three options split.

The three ways to get RTK corrections

1. Radio RTK (the old standard)

A base station on a tower or grain leg broadcasts over a 450 MHz or 900 MHz radio. Your machine needs a radio to hear it. It works — but radio is line-of-sight. Trees, rolling ground, and distance all eat the signal, which is why radio networks need tall towers and repeaters, and why you've probably lost RTK in a back corner of a far-off field and watched the light bar go amber mid-pass. You'll also typically pay your dealer a network access fee every year — in our area that commonly runs around $2,000/yr, though it varies by dealer — plus the cost of a radio on every machine.

2. John Deere SF-RTK (satellite-delivered)

SF-RTK sends corrections down from the satellite itself. No base station, no radio, and honest-to-goodness good performance — we sell StarFire 7500 receivers that run it. The catch is the business model: $1,500 per receiver, per year, forever. Run four receivers and you're writing a $6,000 check every single year, and the day you stop paying, the accuracy goes away. You're renting.

3. Cellular RTK (what CloudBase does)

Cellular RTK sends the same correction data over the 4G LTE network your phone already uses, via a standard protocol called NTRIP. A small CloudBase modem bolts onto your receiver, picks up corrections through a cell connection, and feeds them straight in. Because cell coverage doesn't care about line-of-sight, there's no tower to build, no repeaters, and no radio shadow behind the woods.

Where do the corrections come from? You've got two choices:

  • A free state CORS network. Indiana runs InCORS — a state-operated network of base stations that broadcasts RTK corrections at no charge. If you farm in Indiana (Ohio and Michigan have equivalents), your modem can connect to it today. Your only ongoing cost is the modem's support and SIM plan.
  • Your own CloudBase base station. One base at your shop covers up to a 30-mile radius (CloudBase published spec) and serves every machine you own — any brand, any color — with up to sub-quarter-inch repeatable accuracy. You own the network. Nobody can raise the rent.

What it costs: the honest three-way comparison

Where radio RTK fits

Radio RTK's yearly network fee usually lands between SF-RTK and owning your own cellular base, but the comparison isn't really about dollars — it's about the tower. Radio needs line-of-sight, so its weak spots are structural: dead zones behind timber, repeater maintenance, and a radio on every machine. Cellular corrections ride the LTE network instead, so coverage follows cell signal rather than sight lines. And if you're honest about a 2-receiver farm...
